Kinship Center's Family Ties Program gives thanks for Thanksgiving Dinners made possible by Community Members

This year, several Monterey County families will be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner thanks to the generous efforts of various community members.

Early Tuesday morning members of the VOS Racing Team met up at Kinship Center's Family Ties Program office in Salinas to deliver and assemble Turkey Dinners.

For the fifth year in a row, the VOS Bicycle Racing Team raised funds and coordinated with the local FoodMaxx to purchase all the necessary components for a Thanksgiving dinner- from the turkey to the stuffing and all the way to the potatoes.  When all was said and done, 50 boxes filled with turkey dinners had been assembled and ready to distribute to Family Ties clients.

Family Ties works to help children remain connected to their families and a familiar environment, by keeping them with relatives instead of having to enter into the child welfare system. "Most of these caregivers are grandmothers, living on fixed or low incomes that struggle to balance the financial impact of taking on the care of their grandchildren." said Charles Chambers, Program Director.   "This generosity allows our families to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.”

This year we are looking at distributing approximately 80 Thanksgiving dinners. Along with the donations from the VOS Racing Team, we also received a donation from Ms. Mary Cleaver.  For at least the past seven years she has donated 20-25 turkey dinners for our families."

Family Ties is also a Food Pantry under the Monterey County Food Bank Network.  Throughout the year, individuals in need of food are able to pick up canned goods and other non-perishable foods at this location.  During the holidays, this also enables Family Ties to apply for a "turkey grant" and this year although donations are down at the food bank, Family Ties was still able to receive some turkeys to add to the dinners it will be distributing.

"Family Ties staff would like to give thanks to these three very special donors which help to support our clients at this time of the year when family is so important." appreciated Chambers, "As our name implies, Family Ties' goal is to bind families together and what better opportunity than around a Thanksgiving dinner table."
